Lower Sussex Metric Century Ride

Wednesday October 7, 2015

Nuts & Bolts

The forecast today for the Fenwick Island, DE area on Wednesday predicts a very nice day for our next Out of Area ride.  After our current Nor’easter anything with sun in it looks fine.  With temperatures starting out in the mid 50’s, and climbing to the low to mid 70’s under partly sunny skies, and a moderate NW  breezeI am looking forward to a pleasant ride with as many of you as can make it.

For those living in the Lewes/Rehoboth area we can meet at Peddlers Village (PV) and car pool from there. We will depart from PV at 8:00 AM.  For those of you who will meet us in Fenwick – we will meet near the Harris Teeter in the parking lot on the SW side.  It is located at 31221 Americana Pkwy. (Intersection of Rt. 54 & Americana Pkwy. Selbyville, DE  .NOTE – This is a different location than previously advertised.  We’ll try to clip in by 9:00 AM.

The ride distance is 62.6 miles but can/could be shortened – if needed – or some riders might choose to ride a shorter distance and still see some of the ‘good’ stuff.  Lunch is planned at about the 29.5 mile mark in the Delmar Shopping Center at the corner of US 13 and SR 54. There is both a McDonalds* and a WaWa* in that shopping center.  Other rest stops will be at the Nature Center in Trap Pond SP (39 mi.) and where decided by the riders.

This ride is essentially an east west ride with slight variations.  We cross into Maryland and back on two occasions and our maximum elevation is ~ 56’. Slightly west of Whitesville Rd. about 200 yds. from  Rt 54 (Line Rd.) along the tree line is the highest point in Sussex County (~75-80’).  No granny gear needed. I would hope that we would be back here by about 3:30 to 4 PM but there are many variables.  On the return route we pass thru Frankford* at ~55 miles.

Cue sheets will be attached. Contact Frank Combs if you need to know how to download the route. It has been produced fromridewithgps.

So, let’s have a safe and sane ride – the cops are not chasing us.  I would like to pace to be in the 14 ½ to 15 ½ mph speed range with safe distances between riders.  Ride 2 abreast only if, whenand where there is a wide shoulder, OR, it is safe to do so. Be courteous to other vehicles – they are bigger than we are.

Let’s get out there and ride!!!!!   Jack Boettger
