    2019 DoubleCross – June 29th

Many bicycle rides cross states that are measured in hundreds of miles and many days. The White Clay Bicycle Club offers an alternative that is modest in time, effort and stamina (a bicycle ride nearly anyone can do) that crosses and “doublecrosses” an entire state in 62 total miles (metric century) over flat terrain. In addition to the traditional metric century route, we offer shorter 31 mile loops for those who would like a shorter ride.

The metric century ride is laid out on a figure eight pattern, beginning and ending at Smyrna High School, Smyrna Delaware.  We first go east to Woodland Beach on the Delaware Bay, Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, and a return through the fishing town of Leipsic, DE. Return to Smyrna to complete a 31 mile ride, or enjoy a rest stop before heading west on the second 31 mile loop taking you to Millington Wildlife Demonstration Area and the Blackiston Wildlife Area.

All routes will be marked and SAG supported.  Cue sheets will be available at Registration.  GPS-type files (and cue in PDF) will be made available to pre-registrants.

The Savage is Saturday, September 21, 2019

    Savage Century ride 15savage-qr

The White Clay Bicycle Club invites you to come out and take the challenge as it once again hosts the 41st annual Savage Century ride, one of the most scenic and challenging rides in our area (especially if you choose one of the longer routes). Select a route – approximately 44, 77 or 100 miles – and enjoy one of the premier rides in the mid-Atlantic region hosted by the White Clay Bicycle Club.

The 44- (approx 2300 ft of climb) and 77-mile loops (approx 5150 ft of climb) have a few shorter climbs, while the major hills are on the 100-mile loop!  The 100 mile loop is 7500 Feet of climb for 2018.

Many have enjoyed the challenge of the Savage as a “ride of passage”, while others return year after year to simply enjoy  the rural beauty of Chester and Lancaster Counties – from the simple  charm of Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish farmlands to the scenic vistas from the hills along the Susquehanna River. Warm up on the rolling hills heading west out of Newark, DE toward Nottingham, PA. Then head for the hills and put your training to the test, on the infamous Slate Hill, Bradys Hill, Pilgrims Pathway,  and Furniss Road!

For those new to the Savage Century, it is recommended for the longer routes that bikes be equipped with a low gear of about 40 gear-inches (e.g. 28 tooth rear sprocket and 42-tooth chain ring on a typical road bike with a 27 inch tire) or lower to prevent undue straining of your knees on the major hills. Come for the ride, ride for the challenge!

    DOGFISH HEAD IPA

Our 2019 ride will be on Saturday, October 19. Pre-registration will open on BikeReg.com/IPA on May 15 at Noon.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make our inaugural event a HUGE success!  We were able to donate $40,000 to Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, Sussex Cyclists, and other local organizations in Delaware. Check out the Velo Amis Facebook for 2018 event photos.

The Dogfish Head I.P.A. (I Pedal A-Lot) is a gran fondo style bicycling tour of southern Delaware. Rides will start and finish at the Dogfish Head Milton brewery.

    About the Ride:

Our 2019 event date is Saturday, October 19. This scenic ride begins and ends at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and travels throughout Sussex County, Delaware. The routes are mostly flat and almost entirely on rural roads.  Maps will be published soon. Please be advised that route changes may be made depending on DelDot requirements or local road conditions.

    Distances are the:
Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA: approximately 50 kilometers
75 Minute IPA: approximately 75 kilometers
120 Minute IPA: approximately 120 kilometers

This year, know that whatever route you ride, you'll be supporting the creation of the Grove Park Canal Access in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Rehoboth Beach and Lewes community leaders have long envisioned canal access points on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, from which boat passengers may safely access both communities' downtown areas. The access will also allow paddlesport enthusiasts (kayaks/SUPs) to enjoy the canal. Riders on the 75 Minute route will enjoy a rest stop at the future site of the dock. Thanks for your support!

The Dogfish Head tasting room will be open after the event. No outside alcohol allowed.

    What you'll get:
Your entry includes a sweet bike route, stocked aid stations, an event long sleeve shirt (as long as you register by 7/15), a stainless steel tall boy beer can (see below), tasty post-ride grub, live music, and two Dogfish Head craft beers (for riders over 21 only - must have ID).

Rider guide as well as final maps & GPS files will be sent to registered riders after pre-registration closes.
