I want to thank everybody who came out this morning to Cape Henlopen State Park to help mark the posts along the bike trail. Thanks to John Eckenrode who started the efforts and to Bob Brown of Bike Delaware, and Sussex Cyclists for taking the lead in organizing this worthwhile effort. We can only hope that this makes a difference.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered this summer for the Bicycle Safety Checkpoints. We had 13 scheduled with a few rained out. Every Checkpoint was sufficiently manned. I didn’t need to ask for help at all which makes my job easier. Thanks again for everyone’s cooperation and support. It’s greatly appreciated for this great program.

The article below is from today's Cape Gazette:

DNREC issues statement on Wolfe Neck artifacts

    by Ron MacArthur
    August 2, 2024

The Division of Parks and Recreation’s proposed bike/pedestrian trail at Wolfe Neck in Cape Henlopen State Park is in limbo.

The site is the current location of the Sussex County Wolfe Neck Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility. The county had plans to convert the nearly 400-acre site to forest and provide access to the state park.

Agreements had been signed and grants applied for, the trail was designed and Sussex County had spent funds in 2022 to design a switch from spray irrigation to fixed-head pivot ground irrigation. The project was full steam ahead and expected to be completed in two to three years.

However, in June 2023, the joint project between Sussex County and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Parks and Recreation hit a snag when significant cultural resources were found during a Phase 1 archaeological study on the proposed trail alignment, which now requires a Phase II study.

For people that have joined this group that don’t know me, I thought I would share an article in our local paper about why I joined the ESR, and how I was inspired by Terry Bourgeois to start the Keystone state ride.
